Das 1994 veröffentlichte vierte Album „Transilvanian Hunger“ gilt als das ultimative Manifest des primitiven, monotonen Black Metal. Fast im Alleingang von Fenriz in seinem „Necrohell Studio“ geschrieben und aufgenommen (mit Nocturno Culto am Gesang), wurde das Werk massiv von Bands wie Von, Bathory und Burzum inspiriert.

Besondere Bekanntheit erlangte das Album auch durch die lyrischen Beiträge von Varg Vikernes (Burzum). Mit seinem hypnotischen, minimalistischen Sound zementierten Darkthrone hiermit endgültig ihren Status als unangefochtene Ikonen des norwegischen Untergrunds.
