Bevor sie zu Black-Metal-Legenden wurden, starteten Darkthrone Ende der 80er Jahre im Death Metal. Ihr 1990er Debütalbum „Soulside Journey“ wurde in den berühmten schwedischen Sunlight Studios von Tomas Skogsberg (Entombed) produziert.

Im Gegensatz zu ihrem späteren rohen Stil bietet dieses Album atmosphärischen, technisch anspruchsvollen und komplexen Death Metal, hörbar beeinflusst von Größen wie Autopsy und Death. Obwohl es ihr einziges reines Death-Metal-Werk blieb, gilt es bis heute als absolutes Meisterwerk des Genres.
